We all hear a lot about tummy time. Tummy time is a must! We are all about tummy time at our house too. I have a ton of tips for tummy time! As great as tummy time is, I realize that it isn’t a position that baby is going to be in all day when playing. Many people are great at getting their baby out and letting them play on their back and many understand the importance of tummy time, but there is also the side lying position that often gets overlooked. Side lying play another great choice for play with baby.
Side Lying Play Tips
Side lying play should also be done when baby is awake and supervised.
Did you know that research has shown that babies should spend at least 80 minutes in tummy time by the time they are 4 months. The more the better! Babies need lots of opportunities (more than 80 minutes) to be on the floor and moving. This includes the back, tummy and side lying. We now that babies are often accustomed to being on their back. They sleep that way, are often carried that way and equipment positions them that way. We can’t forget to include side lying as a position of play as well.
Side lying has it’s benefits! Playing in tummy time and side lying can reduce the time on the back therefore helping keep that nice shape of the head. While playing in side lying it’s easier for babies to bring their hands together in mid line as they are not fighting with gravity as much.
